Created in 2012, the Ornamental Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory (LCTPO) of the Department of Crop Science, has as main objective to establish protocols of vegetables (ornamental, medicinal and fruit) and develop new technologies in the system of in vitro propagation. In the study of new technologies, the effect of different light spectra on in vitro plant development, the use of this technique in the minimum growth aimed at in vitro conservation is highlighted. The development of tropical ornamental species specific protocols such as heliconias and costus, as well as Amazonian plants such as Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis) and Tucumã (Astrocarium aculeatum), are already established materials that are added to the research in progress with Vanila, Bamboo, Orchids In general and medicinal as Apricot of Monkey (Couroupita guianensis Aubl.- Lecythidaceae.).Another area of activity of the LCTPO is in the study of somaclonal variation. With experience in banana culture, the work team was successful in the development of a new cultivar of Heliconia rostrata, called cv. Esalqueana in honor of the Superior School of Agriculture Luiz de Queiroz, as the first cultivar to be launched by LCTPO.
